Data and sources

OpenStreetMap

Places, coordinates, addresses, opening hours, cuisines and the diet:* tags come from OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors, licensed ODbL. We query the public Overpass API at a modest rate with a descriptive user agent.

Menus

Menu text is fetched from the restaurant's own published page, following robots.txt, one request at a time, with caching so a page is never fetched twice in a week. We store the extracted dish names, not a copy of the page.

Members

Confirmations, added dishes and reviews are contributed by members. We store an account email and hashed session identifiers. IP addresses are stored only as a keyed hash for abuse control, never in the clear.

Chain menus

For a small number of large chains we apply the chain's own published vegan options to each location, marked as such. The list, its countries and every modification note are in the open source of this site and covered by tests, because a wrong claim there is wrong at thousands of places at once. A location's own menu reading, or a member's confirmation, always takes precedence over the chain entry.

Member-added places

Restaurants members add carry their own identifiers and are never overwritten by an import. Adding a place records what the member said they knew as their own vote, visible on the page, and nothing more.

HappyCow

HappyCow is the best known vegan restaurant directory and its terms do not permit scraping or reuse of its listings, so we do not take data from it. Where a place also exists there, we link out to it. Our own coverage is built from open data plus what members contribute here.

Corrections

Anything wrong on a place page can be reported from that page. Errors in the underlying map data are best fixed at OpenStreetMap itself, which then flows back here on the next import.
